Waterford Airport has announced a dramatic 51 per cent increase in the number of passengers travelling through the regional airport for the South East in the first quarter of 2008, compared to the same period last year. In the first quarter of 2008, 25,968 passengers travelled through Waterford Airport, up from 17,238 passengers in the same period of 2007.
The popularity of Waterford Airport's flights to London Luton and Manchester has also increased, with an extra 16% flying to London, and 51% to Manchester compared to the first quarter of 2007. The Birmingham route has also proven very popular in its first year of operation.
Waterford Airport chairman, Nicky Fewer, said: "This increase is further proof that Waterford Airport is now an integral part of life for people living in the South East. Ease of access, frequency of flights and the overall savings in time and expense compared to using other airports is now clear.
"There is a consistently high demand for flights from Waterford, as passengers realise how much more convenient it is to fly from Waterford than travelling to either Cork or Dublin airports. Conversely, the number of foreign visitors from the hinterland of the overseas airports with direct connections to Waterford has now become an increasingly important part of our business and one which we plan to concentrate on and grow significantly.
"We believe that Waterford Airport offers a stress-free travelling experience, with very reasonably-priced car parking and conveniently timed flights.
"The number of flights and destinations are increasing with each year, and we at the Airport are very proud to have flights to Amsterdam, Bordeaux, Faro, Lorient and Malaga, which begin from May 1.
"The ongoing success of Waterford Airport is testament to the hard work and dedication of Graham Doyle, Waterford Airport CEO, his team and the on-going commitment of my fellow directors and members of the board. Their continuing efforts mean that our passengers can expect a high level of customer service when they fly through the Airport, making their trip as pleasant and easy as possible."
